Meme Double Feature, Part 1: Playlist

Welcome to Part 1 of our Double Feature, the Playlist meme!

For every character out there, there's a character playlist, lovingly crafted by somebody who thinks about these characters a definitely normal amount. There's never enough songs on a character's playlist, though! And what better way to expand your playlist than getting recommendations from others?

To participate in the meme, here's all you need to do!

  1. Create a post with your character's name and canon
  2. Link to their history/wiki/etc, or specify that you're just looking for a general vibe-reading (if applicable; if your character's an OC, feel free to give a description of whatever length you like!)
  3. Additionally, if looking for a specific type of music or a general sound, feel free to mention that!
  4. Post it, and see if you've got any recommendations to offer other folks!

Suggestions can be any type: fairly standard-form songs, instrumentals, serious, jokey, etc. Have fun, and happy listening!

Looking for songs that are about lost childhoods, meeting massive expectations, missing a partner, grief, and similar stuff, ideally with ethereal vibes. Also the occasional autistic girl jam would be great!

I'll probably think of like five more songs the minute I post this but my kneejerk instinct at first is In The Wake of Your Leave by Gang of Youths! It's a song about grief and this in particular strikes me as evocative:

So as you canyoneered from our world upwards
And the angels took their place
I was the loser at your funeral
No emotion conveyed
It was drawn out in vain
And the idiot I am just figured
In the wake of your leave
That I'd never hear from you again

Yes this is on Leon's playlist too but look--

Re: having to grow up too fast, In the Backseat by Arcade Fire? yes i’m still on my AF bullshit. It’s not particularly ethereal but it’s definitely less rock ‘n roll than their other stuff.

(Also similarly, Mitski’s Class of 2013…………)

Themes:

memory loss/hypnosis/mindfuckery

masking, in the psychological sense

Heyyyy yeeeeeah yeeeaaaah yeah yeah, hey yeaaaah yeah, I said hey, what's going on?

Jokes aside: "Tongues" by Joywave is a good one, and "Polite Dance Song" always makes me think of Cecil.

Leon S. Kennedy | Resident Evil 4 (Remake)

Leon's canonical taste in music as demonstrated by the shit he listens to on the radio in his car is, unfortunately, the whitest white boy buttrock. This is a genre I enjoy but am not terribly versed in so please hand me recommendations from that.

Anyway in terms of the more "vibes based" school of playlists than "would the character listen to this" philosophy, I'm looking for songs about:
  • Burying your anger and depression as deep as possible
  • Falling in love with doomed people or ideas
  • Keen awareness that you are also doomed
  • Training montages especially with an emphasis on being motivated to keep going despite how awful everything is
A link to his extremely under construction playlist is here if that helps any!! Shit also Wiki Link, noting that he's specifically from the end of RE4 in the remake continuity.

John Rambo | FIRST BLOOD/Rambo (CW: outdated slur)

For his playlist, the first song is 30-40 years old & uses a questionable word for the Romany people.

For a look at his playlist so far?

I think Intervention by Arcade Fire has good vibes and great lyrics for John! References to war, loss, and other notes that just feel right for him in a way that I'm struggling to put into words oops

On war and love and struggle, on futility, helplessness and uselessness, invisibility and ineffectiveness, suppression of the self. Thankless tasks, always offering help, kindness. Mourning. Being unable to reciprocate someone’s love. Hope that one day the bad situation will end, or that it already has. Bonus points if Christian references, but by no means necessary.

Preferably anywhere along the lines of American folk but I’m not overly picky. He’s got 2 wiki pages here and here. Extremely extremely under construction playlist here. (CW: “Idumea” is a Christian folk hymn.)

If you're looking for a hopeful take on wrestling with bad circumstances, TrusT by Half Alive has this with tasteful allusions to Christianity.

I'm going back and forth on this one -- it touches on a ton of those themes but might also lean too heavily on explicit loss of faith to suit Mulcahy -- but: Mother, I Climbed by Tracy Grammer.
yournewsidekick: (fault lines)

Nimona | Nimona (2023) + CRAU

[personal profile] yournewsidekick 2024-05-17 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a ton of stuff for Nimona's FUCK YOU riot grrl side but next to nothing for her darker, more feral side; the tension she feels re: being called a monster; or the overwhelming loneliness, abandonment issues, actual pain of being an outcast while still being furious at the world, etc. Bonus points for anything with a punk rock vibe, but not a requirement.
