FIRST NEW ARRIVALS IN HALF-DECADE: MORE TO FOLLOW?

By Yorick Aberdeen

TAWNY BEACH - Big news at Jack’s Marina--- for the first time in roughly five years, the Marrow Isle Port Authority has reported a new arrival by ferry. And it’s not just one person.

Since the advent of the Barrier that has plagued our fair island for the past 5 years, no transport vessels have been logged for departure or arrival by the Port Authority. And for good reason! Any boat that attempted to make the journey beyond the blackened waters surrounding the island has met with a terrible fate ranging from property destruction to untimely demise. While said casualties don’t quite carry the sting they used to, the situation has obviously proven less than ideal for those looking to leave and ultimately halted the mass exodus from Pumpkin Hollow indefinitely.

Today, for the first time since the formation of the Barrier, we are seeing brand new faces arrive at the docks. All of them have been somewhat disoriented and some have claimed to be from locations that do not exist in our world. We approached one of these new arrivals, Milo Fields, for comment on his experience.

“A lady in an office told me I was dead and then I woke up on a boat,” Fields, 26, was quoted as stating on the matter. Succinct and fascinating, indeed! It would seem that for once, our island’s propensity for supernatural oddities has brought us something that we can be hopeful about. More on this as it develops.

‘CREEPY LITTLE TREES’ SEEN IN TOWN

By Yorick Aberdeen

My Image

Artist rendition of a "Brutok".

NORTHWEST HOLLOW (Prague Mills) - This morning Town Hall received a report from the road by the lumber mill, which leads out to Crane’s Ridge, that there have been more sightings of the “tiny tree people” that have been appearing around Lockwood Forest. Over the past few weeks there have been multiple sightings of short-statured creatures with gnarled limbs, bark complexions, and leaf-shaped masks moving about among the trees. There have also been several reports claiming that they have been in town. These reports are particularly prominent in areas toward the outskirts of the forest such as the aforementioned Prague Mills.

However, movement is not the only activity people claim to have seen. Many of these sightings detail more insidious behaviors such as mean-spirited practical jokes, theft, and attempted kidnapping.

The Pumpkin Hollow Gazette reached out to local historian and town council member Dahlia Leeds for any insight on these creatures from her research.

“These creatures appear to be Brutoks,” Leeds, 23, concluded in her interview with us on Tuesday evening. “They’re angry woodland spirits known to appear in cursed forests, much like our own.”

Ms. Leeds went on to issue a number of safety warnings for residents. According to her research, these Brutoks often move in groups and will lock on to woodland travelers who make eye contact with them. Their eyes are not visible so this can be done by accident quite easily if one spends too much time staring into trees. If Brutoks attach themselves to you, they will follow you home, proceeding to destroy your property, hide your personal items, attempt to cause you bodily harm, tear up your garden, and eventually spirit you away to the woods. Victims of these kidnappings will be “planted” in the woods by the Brutoks and spend the next several hours enduring the deeply unpleasant process of being turned into a tree, ultimately killing the individual. A gruesome affair.

There are several ways to dispel a Brutok invasion before it escalates to kidnapping. Ms. Leeds recommends observing their behavior for clues and keeping an eye out for puzzles set by the creatures while outside, though there may be other solutions. If you are unable to dispel them, it is possible to fight them off with brute force. Those walking in or near the woods are advised to keep their eyes on the trail but listen carefully for sounds of distress and be prepared to intervene. Should you encounter any trees that look like people, Ms. Leeds has also cited the unfortunate need to burn the unsettling foliage in order to release the spirit of the victim so that they can regenerate as usual.

As always, the sharing of information and community vigilance are imperative in warding off this new threat. Please share any information you have on the message boards at town hall or with your neighbors, and consider reaching out to Ms. Leeds or any other respected community figure if you find yourself in a bind. Keep your lanterns lit, Pumpkin Hollow. We’re in for quite the summer.

CUCUMBER FESTIVAL CANCELED DUE TO UNFORTUNATE TURNIP HEX; REPLACED WITH POTLUCK

By Yorick Aberdeen

My Image

They haunt my dinner plate and my dreams.

DOWNTOWN (Temple of Sacred Roots) - In lighter news, a solution has been found to the much-loathed Turnip Hex debacle.

As most residents of Pumpkin Hollow are aware, earlier in spring a crop hex was placed on the island by an unidentified witch that turned all ground crops sown at the time into turnips. While this is not as bad as it could be, it has resulted in mounds upon mounds of turnips and a complete lack of other crops until later harvests. The witch who cast this hex is still at large.

An unfortunate side effect of the hex has been that the beloved and highly anticipated Cucumber Festival, which normally takes place in early June, had to be canceled due to a lack of cucumbers. This has earned the ire of a great many residents who have cited the festival as “their last source of a modicum of joy on this goddess-forsaken island”, among other more colorful statements.

Reverend Degas Clayton of the Temple of Sacred Roots of our Four Earthly Mothers has proposed an alternative to the festival. While not nearly as exciting, Clayton, 57, believes that a turnip potluck is still a great community-building exercise and excuse for a social gathering. He encourages attendees to find the most inventive ways they can think of to cook up excess turnips and present their dishes on the temple lawn during the party. “The sooner we eat the blasted things, the sooner we’ll no longer have to look at them anymore,” said Mayor Poe in her endorsement of the event. It would appear she plans to be in attendance.

To participate, please bring an appropriate dish to the Temple of Sacred Roots on Friday at noon. The party will run until sundown and wine will be provided, which may improve the taste of the turnips. New residents are encouraged to attend even if they are not able to provide a dish so that they can meet their local community and learn more about the church.

The forests have had many unusual visitors as of late. New faces from the village, unafraid or reckless as they leave the usual warnings by the wayside and venture forth into the unknown. This one catches her interest in particular, marching forward with eyes firmly shut.

The breeze carries a laugh and the damp scent of muddy earth and sage. Someone is close by, perhaps uncomfortably close as the strange man raises his fists. What will he do, they wonder.

"You're new, too, then?" She seemed interested. "Are you liking the area so far...?" Maneet laughed. "I know that's such a mundane question to ask about a place like this, but despite everything... it seems nice. Homey."

“My ship?” Now that was an intriguing thought and the fact that he had come up with it made him all the more interesting to her. Studying with a renewed spark, she arched a brow as though she found something mildly amusing before shaking her head and looking back at the door.

“That would be bloody brilliant but no. Think of it more like a little pocket dimension I’ve carved out for myself. Now to access it and to keep others from doing it, I can move my door around to wherever I want it. It’s really quite convenient until it’s not doing what it’s supposed,” she sighed as she looked at the door and stared inward at the room again.

“It’s a fine room,” she continued, waving a hand. “But it’s not mine and it doesn’t have what I need. It seems there is something here blocking me which isn’t really a surprise but still frustrating.”

“I guess if I died, I’m powerless?” That was a troubling thought.

Andy laughs in response, a tad foolish was absolutely right. While riches and fame weren't exactly her primary motivations, thinking of herself as an "adventurer" was oddly satisfying.

"I think that this is a strange situation we've all found ourselves in, and even if it makes me foolish...well, I don't know that I'm willing to pass up the opportunity to fully experience...whatever this is."

"Absolutely," Dahlia agreed. "And if I see anyone like you've described, I'll let them know you asked after them."

Having his name would certainly make that easier! She offered a handshake. "Dahlia Leeds. Pleased to meet you. And if there's anything else I can help with, I'm a member of town council, so please don't hesitate to let me know. Work, housing, directions, you name it!"

"As a matter of fact!" Dahlia brightened, more than happy to discuss the library. "The Greymare Library is just up the road, with topiaries outside and the columns on the front. I'd be happy to show you! It's probably my favorite place in the whole town."

[ Lucky indeed. Jack happened to be walking in the part of the forest nearest Leeds Manor, conveniently just as the lady of the house was heading home for the day. Seeing the eerie looking young man scuffling with Brutoks, she quickly took action, smacking one of the creatures with her purse. She was frightfully thin--- how anyone so slight could hit that hard with just a fabric bag full of coins was an impressive sight to behold. But she managed to bowl the small group of them over with relative ease, which made a sound not unlike bamboo wind chimes clanking together. ]

Run! Head to the big house! I'll let you in!

"As much as animals can choose to take in a humanoid child, yes," Ahri muses. "I don't remember the circumstances. Perhaps they just saw a creature in distress and their nurturing instinct kicked in."

It's a strange story, she knows, but she feels nothing but fondness for those times. She had been too young to know the tragedies of life; all she'd known was the joy of playing with the young kits, the warmth of curling up in their den to sleep, and the thrill of hunting side by side.

Mo'rtajha's not wrong about this seeming like something out of a story.

"I too wish that somebody else had been chosen, but I suppose we have to deal with the fate we were given. Now all we can do is investigate a way to return." Ahri grimaces faintly. "I haven't the first clue where to start looking, though."

Ahri squints against the bright flare of light, instinctively raising a hand to shield her eyes. This must be the power that Zelda had spoken to, the ability to seal away evil and darkness.

Her grip on the branch is preventing the Brutok from hauling her away any further, and from the angry edge to their creaking noises, they're none too happy about it. But it does make it easier to grab them, Ahri's hands coming down again and again to pluck a Brutok off Zelda and fling it away.

The final few obviously weigh their options, looking at their currently-on-fire fellows scattered around the forest floor, and decide to run, skittering into the gloom of the forest.

Ahri still looks on edge, her tails held in a threatening display, but her hands are gentle as she brushes flecks of bark off Zelda's arms, checking to see if their grip had hurt her. "Are you injured?"

Logan tenses at the sound of laughter, jerking his head in the direction it seems to be coming from. "Wanna tell me what's so funny?" He asks, his voice low, almost but not quite a growl as he starts cautiously towards he source of the scent, careful to keep his footing as he goes.

"Ahri. And yes, my arrival was by sea. It seems to be the common tale for those of us who are new here."

She pulls a piece of roasted turnip off her skewer, chewing delicately. She doesn't need a lot of food -- her diet is distinctly more predatory in nature -- but she does enjoy eating human food here and there. Even this turnip is fairly enjoyable. Ahri casts an assessing gaze over Cameron, vulpine ears cocked curiously.

"Let me guess," she hums, a playful glint in her eyes. "You have a sturdy build; are you a tradesman? A bodyguard, perhaps? If either of those are true, you'll be keenly welcomed here."

Bars aren't exactly Ahri's usual thing. They're too crowded, too noisy, and too full of over emotional people. To her heightened and empathic senses, they're incredibly grating. But she's on a mission to learn as much as she can about Pumpkin Hollow, and that means looking everywhere. Including the bar. So she'd resigned herself to a glass of wine and an uncomfortable hour -- though she looks anything but uncomfortable, expression held distant and thoughtful, vulpine ears swiveling to catch every conversation she can, perched on a stool like it's a far more elegant seat.

When the man next to her assumes that she's a new arrival, she's hardly surprised. She have refashioned the plains linen clothing they're gifted into a simple dress, but it's still recognizable as new arrival clothing.

"A few weeks," she replies, casting a curious gaze at his hands. They look normal, if not for the strange sound they'd made when he'd cracked his knuckles. "And yourself? You still have the smell of the ocean about you, so I will assume that you have just arrived. My condolences." Her lips curve in an amused little smile. "I hope that your journey here was not too traumatic?"

"Yeah...most of us are. Far as I can tell a few of us landed here a few weeks ago and we were the first new faces here in like five years! Isn't that nuts?" It's not the only crazy thing, but it still boggles the Medium's mind anyways.

"It's an important question, you know. Since we're kinda stuck here." He doesn't linger on that thought for long, managing a smile. "I like it for the most part, but I gotta tell you I miss the internet and video games like a lot. Not a deal breaker, though. But before I go running my mouth, what's your name?"

"Just down the road, by the trolley station. That seems to be where they shack up the Enforcers anyways." Lucas jabs his thumb over his shoulder, indicating the direction he had originally come from.

"So, I won't be a stranger, that's for sure. You want some help, or should I let you get back to it?"

"Mister Wagner," Degas repeats, placing a hand to his chest and giving a slight bow. "Of course, it's the least that I could do. The faces of this town are well known to me, so any new arrivals are easy enough to pick out."

He pauses a moment to consider the strange man before him once more. So far Kurt's been nothing but polite, he could at least return the favor in kind. "I am Degas Clayton, the preacher tending to the local Temple. If you need any guidance I would be most happy to provide it."

"You'rrrre a very skilled mage, good serrr~!" She practically purrs, overly exaggerating her r's. "I think I'm mostly alright, yes, but I should very much like to leave this cursed forest! If...if you wouldn't mind traveling with me?"

Mo'rtajha's ears flick, eyeing the other woman curiously. "You remind me of my brother," she says quietly before sighing.

Then, a bit louder. "Oh, but how rrrude of me! I haven't yet introduced myself!" With a flourishing bow and flciking tail, Mo'rtajha curtsy's. "Mo'rtajha Tykha, at your service~!"

Mo'rtajha makes a silent 'oh' at that, having thought that Ahri meant some kind of snow fox like her. It wasn't a strange idea to the miqo'te, but it seems it was the incorrect one!

She draws her legs up onto her chair, hugging her knees to her chest, ears drooping. "Mmm, yes. There is that little matter. I've yet to walk around the town overly much, and there's fields and forest to explore beyond it all I hear. Perhaps its best to start around here and speak with the villagers? Most of them seem friendly enough..."

"I agree. The villagers seem friendly enough, and they are likely the best place to start. They will know this place best, and they will know if there were any unusual events that occurred shortly before we started arriving."

Ahri's not exactly used to being a detective, and she's not sure she's cut out for it. The only mystery she's ever tried to solve is the one of who were people were, and that's a very different kind of investigation.

"I am... not the best at talking with people, though," Ahri admits, grimacing ruefully. "I have never been very social. You, on the other hand, seem confident and talkative and pleasant to be around: I'm sure the people of Pumpkin Hollow will happily engage you."
