It isn't as though Basira doesn't get why, of all the things they've ever talked about, signing onto the Institute was the one thing that wouldn't click. She doesn't think it ever would, not really. She doesn't press the subject. It's not something that would get them anywhere, outside of frustrating Melanie further. Didn't she have enough to be frustrated with these days?
The question that follows it should have been an easier ask, but for a moment that's too long to be convincing, Basira has to consider what the answer to that is. No one's really asked. She certainly hasn't.
"We're fine," she answers, after that too-long beat of quiet. "Things are different, got some figuring out to do, considering the circumstances, but--- we're still us."
Just as Daisy had said to her, and she'd said right back. Even if she doesn't know what us means anymore, it's something.
