Well-mannered, especially when she didn’t start the conversation with such a friendly opening herself. He looks like a clerk, but clerks don’t usually have the sort of right hook that lays other drinkers out flat — at least, not clerks from nice, genteel places.
Evidently, she’d gotten out of some of her better-mannered habits during those years with the family. She’s got to do better than this if she wants to build a real audience.
