FIRST NEW ARRIVALS IN HALF-DECADE: MORE TO FOLLOW?

By Yorick Aberdeen

TAWNY BEACH - Big news at Jack’s Marina--- for the first time in roughly five years, the Marrow Isle Port Authority has reported a new arrival by ferry. And it’s not just one person.

Since the advent of the Barrier that has plagued our fair island for the past 5 years, no transport vessels have been logged for departure or arrival by the Port Authority. And for good reason! Any boat that attempted to make the journey beyond the blackened waters surrounding the island has met with a terrible fate ranging from property destruction to untimely demise. While said casualties don’t quite carry the sting they used to, the situation has obviously proven less than ideal for those looking to leave and ultimately halted the mass exodus from Pumpkin Hollow indefinitely.

Today, for the first time since the formation of the Barrier, we are seeing brand new faces arrive at the docks. All of them have been somewhat disoriented and some have claimed to be from locations that do not exist in our world. We approached one of these new arrivals, Milo Fields, for comment on his experience.

“A lady in an office told me I was dead and then I woke up on a boat,” Fields, 26, was quoted as stating on the matter. Succinct and fascinating, indeed! It would seem that for once, our island’s propensity for supernatural oddities has brought us something that we can be hopeful about. More on this as it develops.

‘CREEPY LITTLE TREES’ SEEN IN TOWN

By Yorick Aberdeen

My Image

Artist rendition of a "Brutok".

NORTHWEST HOLLOW (Prague Mills) - This morning Town Hall received a report from the road by the lumber mill, which leads out to Crane’s Ridge, that there have been more sightings of the “tiny tree people” that have been appearing around Lockwood Forest. Over the past few weeks there have been multiple sightings of short-statured creatures with gnarled limbs, bark complexions, and leaf-shaped masks moving about among the trees. There have also been several reports claiming that they have been in town. These reports are particularly prominent in areas toward the outskirts of the forest such as the aforementioned Prague Mills.

However, movement is not the only activity people claim to have seen. Many of these sightings detail more insidious behaviors such as mean-spirited practical jokes, theft, and attempted kidnapping.

The Pumpkin Hollow Gazette reached out to local historian and town council member Dahlia Leeds for any insight on these creatures from her research.

“These creatures appear to be Brutoks,” Leeds, 23, concluded in her interview with us on Tuesday evening. “They’re angry woodland spirits known to appear in cursed forests, much like our own.”

Ms. Leeds went on to issue a number of safety warnings for residents. According to her research, these Brutoks often move in groups and will lock on to woodland travelers who make eye contact with them. Their eyes are not visible so this can be done by accident quite easily if one spends too much time staring into trees. If Brutoks attach themselves to you, they will follow you home, proceeding to destroy your property, hide your personal items, attempt to cause you bodily harm, tear up your garden, and eventually spirit you away to the woods. Victims of these kidnappings will be “planted” in the woods by the Brutoks and spend the next several hours enduring the deeply unpleasant process of being turned into a tree, ultimately killing the individual. A gruesome affair.

There are several ways to dispel a Brutok invasion before it escalates to kidnapping. Ms. Leeds recommends observing their behavior for clues and keeping an eye out for puzzles set by the creatures while outside, though there may be other solutions. If you are unable to dispel them, it is possible to fight them off with brute force. Those walking in or near the woods are advised to keep their eyes on the trail but listen carefully for sounds of distress and be prepared to intervene. Should you encounter any trees that look like people, Ms. Leeds has also cited the unfortunate need to burn the unsettling foliage in order to release the spirit of the victim so that they can regenerate as usual.

As always, the sharing of information and community vigilance are imperative in warding off this new threat. Please share any information you have on the message boards at town hall or with your neighbors, and consider reaching out to Ms. Leeds or any other respected community figure if you find yourself in a bind. Keep your lanterns lit, Pumpkin Hollow. We’re in for quite the summer.

CUCUMBER FESTIVAL CANCELED DUE TO UNFORTUNATE TURNIP HEX; REPLACED WITH POTLUCK

By Yorick Aberdeen

My Image

They haunt my dinner plate and my dreams.

DOWNTOWN (Temple of Sacred Roots) - In lighter news, a solution has been found to the much-loathed Turnip Hex debacle.

As most residents of Pumpkin Hollow are aware, earlier in spring a crop hex was placed on the island by an unidentified witch that turned all ground crops sown at the time into turnips. While this is not as bad as it could be, it has resulted in mounds upon mounds of turnips and a complete lack of other crops until later harvests. The witch who cast this hex is still at large.

An unfortunate side effect of the hex has been that the beloved and highly anticipated Cucumber Festival, which normally takes place in early June, had to be canceled due to a lack of cucumbers. This has earned the ire of a great many residents who have cited the festival as “their last source of a modicum of joy on this goddess-forsaken island”, among other more colorful statements.

Reverend Degas Clayton of the Temple of Sacred Roots of our Four Earthly Mothers has proposed an alternative to the festival. While not nearly as exciting, Clayton, 57, believes that a turnip potluck is still a great community-building exercise and excuse for a social gathering. He encourages attendees to find the most inventive ways they can think of to cook up excess turnips and present their dishes on the temple lawn during the party. “The sooner we eat the blasted things, the sooner we’ll no longer have to look at them anymore,” said Mayor Poe in her endorsement of the event. It would appear she plans to be in attendance.

To participate, please bring an appropriate dish to the Temple of Sacred Roots on Friday at noon. The party will run until sundown and wine will be provided, which may improve the taste of the turnips. New residents are encouraged to attend even if they are not able to provide a dish so that they can meet their local community and learn more about the church.

"Oh...yeah, I was about to be real shocked if this place was bustling. No offense. Even places back home like this struggle a lot." That's even with people acknowledging the supernatural, msot of the time.

"Oh yeah, I am one of the new guys around. Lucas Kovach," He smile brightly, hand out to shake if the other man wants to take him up on it. "I'm kind of familiar with some of this, but dream study isn't my field, if you get me."

"Well, I should hope you weren't!" And if that gentle scolding trips up the miqo'te at all, she doesn't show it. Instead she smiles enough that her pointy fangs can be seen.

"Well, of course I heard of those little fiends! It seems all the villagers are whispering about them, and just so! They're very annoying! I do wonder how we can be rid of the pests. If I had my focus...ah!" Before she can continue her rant, Mort pauses, hands brought up to her mouth in surprise. "Princess! My lady, I do apologize for running my mouth in such a manner. Pray, do forgive me."

Yes, Nieve is the type to help but usually, it is in trade for information or something that she can use in a later deal. That won't work so much here but she tells herself that she is doing it in trade, in a way, because hopefully, they will help her survive. Or at least help her do something until she can figure a way out. If there is a way out.

"Sounds like a curse or a haunting? Maybe both," Nieve muses with a little frown as he lists all the strange events that had been the start of what they were now. But the way he describes them feels rehearsed or at least rehashed many times over.

"So...do you think we're actually here to help or is this some kind of Purgatory?" She asks, studying him closely.

Tandy couldn't help but jump a little as he startled, jolting awake by the appearance of someone in his...office?

"Uh, I don't know," she admitted as she glanced around, studying the layout of the room before focusing on him again. Now that she was there, she wasn't quite sure what to say or what to ask. But she found that she was waving her hand towards the door, still watching him. "But I saw your sign and I guess I was curious? About what you do here exactly?"

"What?" The tone of her voice is sharp as she glances at the young man nearby, sounding almost annoyed and confused by his sudden appearance before she looks back at the door. She continues to frown but it seems her irritation isn't actually aimed at all.

"No? Maybe?" Her scowl deepens as she closes the door and holds still, her lips moving ever so slightly like she is whispering something under her breath. If she is, it is a short phrase before she opens the door and gives a little growl.

"No, I'm not good. Not good at all," She lets her hand fall back to her side while she stares at the open doorway of her room. "I can't get home."

"Hmm, so something small that might blend in but doesn't really fit for the place if one looks closely. Nice," Nieve drawled, looking over the space in front of her again. Once she was satisfied she didn't see anything, she shifted in the opposite direction that the other woman was heading.

After a moment, she made a little cry of triumph. "Aha! I think I found it. Is this it?"

She stepped back, pointing at a potential puzzle.

Tandy doesn't really like the way the man is looking at her. Not that there is anything threatening about it but he is looking at her too closely and it almost feels like he sees something that he recognizes. Which doesn't sit too well with her since she struggles with anyone trying to...'see' her. No matter what she has told Ty in the past about how lonely she had felt, she is still leery of strangers.

Her brows pull together as he plays up his accent even though she has no way of knowing whether it is actually his real accent or not. Maybe it's a trick on his part? Also when he combines it with oozing charm and old fashioned manners?

"Tandy," she answers despite herself, glancing at his hand before reaching out to take it. "Nice to meet you."

"It depends on the technique I use but I could actually come up with a few ways to use these as a weapon of sorts," she smirked as she looked over the turnips. "I could create a trap out of one? Or make it explode when picked up?"

... Usually it's you asking me this, but are you sure it's a good idea to just go around saying things to people?

It's probably fine.

That's also usually my response!

Erik's expression shuffles through several expressions starting with baffled disbelief before flashing through anger and settling on annoyance. Who does this woman think she is? Actually, that's a very good question.

"If we are to become travel companions then I think I should, at the very least, know your name. I am Lord Erik Osborne." He walks briskly beside her, having no trouble keeping up.

"Are you now?" Erik is tempted to let a little fang slip in his smile to really drive that point home but he still can't be sure that this human won't suddenly turn on him for it.

He raises a thin brow at Lucas. "I suppose that is one way to describe it, yes. Not the way I would, of course."

He offers a cold hand out for Lucas to pull himself up. "Here. Let's get you back on your feet. There could be more of them."

"Princess Zelda, of the kingdom of Hyrule," she replied. "Pleased to make your acquaintance."

His noble title was both a surprise and not surprising at all. He certainly had the attitude of a noble, though most she'd ever known were not so keen to wander the wilderness on their own. Different worlds, she supposed, might have that effect.

"Of what land are you lord?" Her line of thought made her curious.

You see, I've always had the ability to astral project into the dreaming minds of other people, and I knew from a young age I wanted to use this power to help others. I studied clinical psychology in university, as well as the biology and psychology of sleep and dreams. Andy smiles politely at the man, his salt-and-pepper beard reminding her of her father. For a moment her attention drifts, a muddled worry creeping in as she considers her poor father, out there thinking his only daughter was dead. The worry is quickly exchanged for levity as she realizes this man supposes Andy herself could logically be a farmer. It was a fair assumption for a man who knew nothing about her, at least.

"Not a farmer, sadly," Andy shrugs. She smiles as she points to her head. "Just an abundance of useless Trivia Night facts whirling around in there."

Andy scoops something unidentifiable (but surely turnip-based...) onto her plate. "My name is Andy, by the way. I'm one of the, uh...newcomers? Although I'm sure that's fully obvious."

Andy looks up from her newspaper, realizing she probably looks like she's losing it, stopped in the middle of town and talking to a sheet of newsprint. She's so flustered that she almost doesn't register the ears and tail of the individual appearing in front of her. But when Andy does see them, she chooses to momentarily ignore it, because--

"Brutoks. You know about these things?" She glances down at the paper again. "I haven't seen any, no. And to be quite honest, something like this...well, where I'm from, stories like this aren't often taken seriously. I think I need to see one for myself."

"Princess? My apologies for being so impolite, but what ever is a princess doing out here in the woods?" Even if she is, like himself, taken from her own world and transplanted here, she still shouldn't be going out into the forest to fight monsters, should she?

"I am Lord of the Ozark Mountain Clan. Your kingdom is not familiar to me and I suspect my territory will not be known to you, either. It resides in an area of the United States of America called, appropriately, The Ozarks."

Many things in my world have such power that even Kings and warlords tremble before them. To send someone across space, time, or dimensions... yes, I am sure it is very possible for some of them. Easy, even.

[ After all, she has fought against a being that has consumed worlds. A dragon that makes stars. A demon born when light was made. She's fought against Death herself. The question is why. Why would any of them do that? Was it even someone from her world? No, more likely it would be someone from this world, perhaps determined to keep the town of Pumpkin Hollow alive.

It's been a long day. She can puzzle over such questions later, when she has more context. So Ahri's expression slides into the mischevious, throwing Mo'rtahja an appreciative look. ]

It seems like multiple worlds have produced beings like us, then. It's only proper, after all, for beauty to emerge all over the universe and dimensions beyond.

[ At Milo's immediate talk of a job, Ahri's little smile freezes.

Is that what they're expected to do here? She's never had a job. She's never dealt much in currency. She's always just lived off the land, hunting and foraging. Ionia's rich wilderness had easily allowed such a life, but what if Pumpkin Hollow does not? What if she has to live among society here? Is she even capable of that?

Milo's subject change is a welcome relief. Ahri pulls a face, appalled. ]

They took your prosthetic, and did not even see fit to provide you a new one? That's... very cold. Will you be able to farm like that?

[ Ah! A vampire, then. She supposes she could have guessed that: he's cold, his emotions have the weight of many years to her empathic senses, and he's hunting without a weapon at night. It's unusual that he's looking for animals rather than people, though.

Ahri tilts her head, curious. ]

You survive on animals? I was not aware that was possible for a vampire.

[ If she was able to do the same thing... Ahri ruthlessly swallows down the twinge of guilt and wistfulness that thought produces. She raises herself to stand again, vulpine ears swiveling to catch the noises of any animals nearby. She can hear tiny woodland critters, and the far off steps of bigger prey, likely a deer. ]

Well, I'm already here, and there's strength in numbers against the Brutok. [ Ahri smiles, sly. ] May I accompany you in your hunt? I promise I can be quiet, and what you find is all yours.

Zelda smiled at that. "Turnips or no, there is no blessing like that of home-grown, home-cooked food. Living in a farming village for the past few years has taught me that." A beat. "You know, I rather like the sound of your goddesses, from what I've heard. They're much like ours in Hyrule."
