FIRST NEW ARRIVALS IN HALF-DECADE: MORE TO FOLLOW?

By Yorick Aberdeen

TAWNY BEACH - Big news at Jack’s Marina--- for the first time in roughly five years, the Marrow Isle Port Authority has reported a new arrival by ferry. And it’s not just one person.

Since the advent of the Barrier that has plagued our fair island for the past 5 years, no transport vessels have been logged for departure or arrival by the Port Authority. And for good reason! Any boat that attempted to make the journey beyond the blackened waters surrounding the island has met with a terrible fate ranging from property destruction to untimely demise. While said casualties don’t quite carry the sting they used to, the situation has obviously proven less than ideal for those looking to leave and ultimately halted the mass exodus from Pumpkin Hollow indefinitely.

Today, for the first time since the formation of the Barrier, we are seeing brand new faces arrive at the docks. All of them have been somewhat disoriented and some have claimed to be from locations that do not exist in our world. We approached one of these new arrivals, Milo Fields, for comment on his experience.

“A lady in an office told me I was dead and then I woke up on a boat,” Fields, 26, was quoted as stating on the matter. Succinct and fascinating, indeed! It would seem that for once, our island’s propensity for supernatural oddities has brought us something that we can be hopeful about. More on this as it develops.

‘CREEPY LITTLE TREES’ SEEN IN TOWN

By Yorick Aberdeen

My Image

Artist rendition of a "Brutok".

NORTHWEST HOLLOW (Prague Mills) - This morning Town Hall received a report from the road by the lumber mill, which leads out to Crane’s Ridge, that there have been more sightings of the “tiny tree people” that have been appearing around Lockwood Forest. Over the past few weeks there have been multiple sightings of short-statured creatures with gnarled limbs, bark complexions, and leaf-shaped masks moving about among the trees. There have also been several reports claiming that they have been in town. These reports are particularly prominent in areas toward the outskirts of the forest such as the aforementioned Prague Mills.

However, movement is not the only activity people claim to have seen. Many of these sightings detail more insidious behaviors such as mean-spirited practical jokes, theft, and attempted kidnapping.

The Pumpkin Hollow Gazette reached out to local historian and town council member Dahlia Leeds for any insight on these creatures from her research.

“These creatures appear to be Brutoks,” Leeds, 23, concluded in her interview with us on Tuesday evening. “They’re angry woodland spirits known to appear in cursed forests, much like our own.”

Ms. Leeds went on to issue a number of safety warnings for residents. According to her research, these Brutoks often move in groups and will lock on to woodland travelers who make eye contact with them. Their eyes are not visible so this can be done by accident quite easily if one spends too much time staring into trees. If Brutoks attach themselves to you, they will follow you home, proceeding to destroy your property, hide your personal items, attempt to cause you bodily harm, tear up your garden, and eventually spirit you away to the woods. Victims of these kidnappings will be “planted” in the woods by the Brutoks and spend the next several hours enduring the deeply unpleasant process of being turned into a tree, ultimately killing the individual. A gruesome affair.

There are several ways to dispel a Brutok invasion before it escalates to kidnapping. Ms. Leeds recommends observing their behavior for clues and keeping an eye out for puzzles set by the creatures while outside, though there may be other solutions. If you are unable to dispel them, it is possible to fight them off with brute force. Those walking in or near the woods are advised to keep their eyes on the trail but listen carefully for sounds of distress and be prepared to intervene. Should you encounter any trees that look like people, Ms. Leeds has also cited the unfortunate need to burn the unsettling foliage in order to release the spirit of the victim so that they can regenerate as usual.

As always, the sharing of information and community vigilance are imperative in warding off this new threat. Please share any information you have on the message boards at town hall or with your neighbors, and consider reaching out to Ms. Leeds or any other respected community figure if you find yourself in a bind. Keep your lanterns lit, Pumpkin Hollow. We’re in for quite the summer.

CUCUMBER FESTIVAL CANCELED DUE TO UNFORTUNATE TURNIP HEX; REPLACED WITH POTLUCK

By Yorick Aberdeen

My Image

They haunt my dinner plate and my dreams.

DOWNTOWN (Temple of Sacred Roots) - In lighter news, a solution has been found to the much-loathed Turnip Hex debacle.

As most residents of Pumpkin Hollow are aware, earlier in spring a crop hex was placed on the island by an unidentified witch that turned all ground crops sown at the time into turnips. While this is not as bad as it could be, it has resulted in mounds upon mounds of turnips and a complete lack of other crops until later harvests. The witch who cast this hex is still at large.

An unfortunate side effect of the hex has been that the beloved and highly anticipated Cucumber Festival, which normally takes place in early June, had to be canceled due to a lack of cucumbers. This has earned the ire of a great many residents who have cited the festival as “their last source of a modicum of joy on this goddess-forsaken island”, among other more colorful statements.

Reverend Degas Clayton of the Temple of Sacred Roots of our Four Earthly Mothers has proposed an alternative to the festival. While not nearly as exciting, Clayton, 57, believes that a turnip potluck is still a great community-building exercise and excuse for a social gathering. He encourages attendees to find the most inventive ways they can think of to cook up excess turnips and present their dishes on the temple lawn during the party. “The sooner we eat the blasted things, the sooner we’ll no longer have to look at them anymore,” said Mayor Poe in her endorsement of the event. It would appear she plans to be in attendance.

To participate, please bring an appropriate dish to the Temple of Sacred Roots on Friday at noon. The party will run until sundown and wine will be provided, which may improve the taste of the turnips. New residents are encouraged to attend even if they are not able to provide a dish so that they can meet their local community and learn more about the church.

"It's a bit weakened here," Zelda confessed, before cupping her hands in front of her. Without much thought, she manifested a pool of golden, holy light.

"It's harmless to those with good in their hearts," she explained. "But it has the power to banish evil."

"Kurt! Kurt, Kurt is a good name. A strong name, yes." Mo'rtajha offers a toothy smile, her ears flicking a few times.

"Oh, you haven't?" Now those ears flatten out a bit, disappointment plain. "'Tis a race of tall, strong men and women in Eorzea." She stands on her tip-toes, hand raised up even higher. Then she jumps to demonstrate their immense height! "And I am a miqo'te. I suppose I should stop assuming everyone is from the same place?"

She tilts her head, then shakes it, "Mutant? No, good ser. I've not heard of the term before, mine apologies."

"Do not let me keep you, Andy. But pray, do be careful~" Although Mort really doubts the woman will be, but at least she can say she tried!

"I believe that you do!" Mo'rtajha grins toothily, a glimmer of excitement plain in her gaze. And she thinks in similar ways to Ahri, at least in how get extract that information when word won't do...

"That sounds quite fine with me, it has been a trying day hasn't it? For both of us." She nods to herself, then smiles all the brighter. "Oh, but I am so glad that we crossed paths. I feel bolstered by the mere thought of it! Thank you, truly."

"All good thing to keep in mind, yeah." He smiles, even if the last part of that advice doesn't settle well. Dahlia had seemed nice enough?

"Thanks, dude. I appreciate you fielding my questions. I'll try and drop in for a dream thing sometime, but I'll get out of your hair for now."

That sounds like a whole story there Nieve and Lucas would love to follow up on it, but he needs to clear up something first. "Oh sorry, I mean like...well, it seems like people come from different worlds here! I know that sounds bonkers, but I think it's true!"

He takes a step back to watch, hoping that it actually works! And then...nada.

"Aaw, man. I'm sorry. We could try other buildings or something, but like is it a spell you're casting or is it just a thing you can do?"
bluemisfit: (surprised)

[personal profile] bluemisfit 2023-07-09 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
"No one here can die?" Dahlia's offhanded comment caught Kurt by surprise, and it showed in his voice and expression when he spoke. "Is that really true?"
bluemisfit: (grin)

Mort is so cute omg I'm dying here

[personal profile] bluemisfit 2023-07-09 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Kurt smiles in return - he's not against accepting some flattery now and again. And he quite liked this girl, she was sweet and enthusiastic and reminded him a lot of someone he knew back home.

"It's alright - I was just curious," he said to her apology, thinking as they walked. "It seems like most of the people here are from different worlds. We'll all have a lot of learning to do about one another. At least it gives us something in common."

Dahlia pursed her lips slightly, casting her gaze up and to the side as she tried to figure out how exactly to explain.

"Well, yes and no," she began. "About five years ago, something--- swallowed the island. That's the best I can explain it. One day, something changed, and we were all just... trapped. No one could leave. A couple miles off the shore, you can see a clear line where the water becomes lighter. No boats can go past that point without being capsized. No one has entered either, save for you new folks. And anyone that dies doesn't stay dead. They come back after a day or so, in a strange place and a bit worse for wear but always alive."

"Any time, 'dude,'" Neil teased, chuckling. The word sounded comical in his voice, though he was over-emphasizing it a bit because it was new to him. "I look forward to seeing you in, then. Have a lovely day!"
prise_de_fer: (happy - dreamy sigh)

fdsjhks i'm glad!

[personal profile] prise_de_fer 2023-07-09 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
She nods a few times, ears bobbing with the motion. "Yes, that we do, it seems!"

Still full of energy now that she's out of immediate danger, Mort's up on her toes again, eyes twinkling with curiosity. "Are all of your kind such a lovely shade of blue? Can they also go to and fro with the blink of an eye? Tell me of your world!"
bluemisfit: (thinking/talking)

[personal profile] bluemisfit 2023-07-16 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
"And this started five years ago? Do you know what the.. thing that swallowed the island was? Or is there anyone who might?" The information was stunning, but the fact that it seemingly had a cause - and thus, a mystery to solve, perhaps a monster to slay - put it squarely in Kurt's area of expertise. After a moment's pause, he considered another question, "When people do.. 'die,' what happens to their body? Does it disappear? Or do they generate new bodies?"

At least the fact that this phenomenon was linked to an event, to some kind of being perhaps, soothed the part of him that had wondered if this place was some kind of afterlife, a purgatory of sorts. Afterlives don't just start one day. So this was clearly some form of alternate universe, like the other Earths he had visited in the past, which made it feel somewhat easier to swallow being trapped here, at least for now.

"No, we all have different powers and appearances," Kurt replied, happy to indulge her curiosity. "There are others who can teleport, but not exactly the way I do - and others who are blue, but not exactly the way I am. Most of us look more like the villagers than either of us, though." If it made him sad, just for a moment, to think of other mutants - of his friends that he left behind - it only barely showed on his face; he was good at putting up a good front.

[ The words seem to make the gears turn in Link's head very, very slowly. Computers? (Not even the vaguest idea of what that would be.) Cars? (Like carts, but without... tea? Would have to ask, later.) One thing was clear: Lucas was from a very, very different place than he was. ]

Hm... I'm not sure, actually. I'm mostly trying to get the lay of the land. [ He admitted. ] I've been meaning to take a look into the woods, but people seem nervous about that, so I've just been checking out nooks and crannies for now.

"That's what we're trying to figure out," she said. "It's hard to tell. It feels like just a... dark energy, but it's hard to tell where it came from. Several organizations in town, including my Historical Society, have been trying to do separate research on what the cause could be."

"As far as dying, the bodies just tend to vanish when no one is looking and reappear elsewhere, healed. A lot of the time there's a scar of some kind, or other marking, so it would appear to be the same body, but with such an odd phenomenon it's really hard to say for sure."
bluemisfit: (with flair)

[personal profile] bluemisfit 2023-07-16 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"A dark energy?" It wouldn't be the first time that such a thing was a problem for Kurt and his friends. "Is there anything I could do to help?" He was always the first to offer himself - he wanted to help people, and this seemed the most obvious way to accomplish that.
thethirteenthchild: (Default)

[personal profile] thethirteenthchild 2023-07-17 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
"That's what we're trying to figure out! I've been studying the phenomena around the island, trying to see if there's a focal point or a connection. I believe that if we can get to the bottom of what's causing the curse, we can find a solution." Dahlia was alight with enthusiasm. Clearly this was something of a passion project, not only because it is her home, but out of a genuine love of research.

"Of course, that makes perfect sense. Have you had any luck yet?" Kurt was - understandably, given his being trapped here - eager for answers. But he paused, realizing he was perhaps pressing too hard, and added, "I'm sorry, you don't have to recite it all for me. But if there are records perhaps of your investigations, I would love to read them. And any help I can offer, please let me know."

Logan tries to remain patient on the hunt, fighting the idea that he's being toyed with. He doesn't do the best job of it however, and it shows after he's poked. With one practiced move he reaches back for the presumed limb of whatever had poked him, with intention to grab and flip them over his shoulder onto the ground in front of them, a low "Gotcha," growled almost under his breath.
feralwolverine: (friendly smile)

[personal profile] feralwolverine 2023-07-17 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
"What makes you say that?" Logan asks, but his smile becomes a little self mocking. "Yeah. One of life's constants, a nice bar. Or not so nice." He cracks his neck and once again there's something very distantly different, about the sound. It wasn't a surprise per say that sleazoids weren't involved on her end - but it meant all this wasn't related to all that. Which could be a good thing of a bad once.

There's an ounce of disappoint in his chest, though it's easy enough to put down, at the idea that it meant less chance that when his team's parasites took hold there was less chance of them winding up there. He gestures to the bartender for another drink and drolls, almost as an afterthought, "Meanwhile, you look a bit like you're expectin' something to bite ya. Not a fan of a good watering hole?"
thethirteenthchild: (laughing)

[personal profile] thethirteenthchild 2023-07-18 12:52 am (UTC)(link)

My, he's quick too!

She finds herself hurled over his shoulder and landing on the ground. A few moments pass before she erupts into uncontrollable laughter and shaking her arm as if she was shaking the hand that's holding onto her.

"Fun!" She remarks brightly as laughter gives way to chuckling.

Whoops. From the slightly glazed-over look from his new friend it looks like Lucas has thrown a lot of new terms at him. He scratches his cheek, smiling sheepishly.

"Well, I've been out in the forest a few times. I'd definitely recommend going with a buddy, since the brutoks are out there and who knows what else. I'll go with you, if you're really curious."
