FIRST NEW ARRIVALS IN HALF-DECADE: MORE TO FOLLOW?

By Yorick Aberdeen

TAWNY BEACH - Big news at Jack’s Marina--- for the first time in roughly five years, the Marrow Isle Port Authority has reported a new arrival by ferry. And it’s not just one person.

Since the advent of the Barrier that has plagued our fair island for the past 5 years, no transport vessels have been logged for departure or arrival by the Port Authority. And for good reason! Any boat that attempted to make the journey beyond the blackened waters surrounding the island has met with a terrible fate ranging from property destruction to untimely demise. While said casualties don’t quite carry the sting they used to, the situation has obviously proven less than ideal for those looking to leave and ultimately halted the mass exodus from Pumpkin Hollow indefinitely.

Today, for the first time since the formation of the Barrier, we are seeing brand new faces arrive at the docks. All of them have been somewhat disoriented and some have claimed to be from locations that do not exist in our world. We approached one of these new arrivals, Milo Fields, for comment on his experience.

“A lady in an office told me I was dead and then I woke up on a boat,” Fields, 26, was quoted as stating on the matter. Succinct and fascinating, indeed! It would seem that for once, our island’s propensity for supernatural oddities has brought us something that we can be hopeful about. More on this as it develops.

‘CREEPY LITTLE TREES’ SEEN IN TOWN

By Yorick Aberdeen

My Image

Artist rendition of a "Brutok".

NORTHWEST HOLLOW (Prague Mills) - This morning Town Hall received a report from the road by the lumber mill, which leads out to Crane’s Ridge, that there have been more sightings of the “tiny tree people” that have been appearing around Lockwood Forest. Over the past few weeks there have been multiple sightings of short-statured creatures with gnarled limbs, bark complexions, and leaf-shaped masks moving about among the trees. There have also been several reports claiming that they have been in town. These reports are particularly prominent in areas toward the outskirts of the forest such as the aforementioned Prague Mills.

However, movement is not the only activity people claim to have seen. Many of these sightings detail more insidious behaviors such as mean-spirited practical jokes, theft, and attempted kidnapping.

The Pumpkin Hollow Gazette reached out to local historian and town council member Dahlia Leeds for any insight on these creatures from her research.

“These creatures appear to be Brutoks,” Leeds, 23, concluded in her interview with us on Tuesday evening. “They’re angry woodland spirits known to appear in cursed forests, much like our own.”

Ms. Leeds went on to issue a number of safety warnings for residents. According to her research, these Brutoks often move in groups and will lock on to woodland travelers who make eye contact with them. Their eyes are not visible so this can be done by accident quite easily if one spends too much time staring into trees. If Brutoks attach themselves to you, they will follow you home, proceeding to destroy your property, hide your personal items, attempt to cause you bodily harm, tear up your garden, and eventually spirit you away to the woods. Victims of these kidnappings will be “planted” in the woods by the Brutoks and spend the next several hours enduring the deeply unpleasant process of being turned into a tree, ultimately killing the individual. A gruesome affair.

There are several ways to dispel a Brutok invasion before it escalates to kidnapping. Ms. Leeds recommends observing their behavior for clues and keeping an eye out for puzzles set by the creatures while outside, though there may be other solutions. If you are unable to dispel them, it is possible to fight them off with brute force. Those walking in or near the woods are advised to keep their eyes on the trail but listen carefully for sounds of distress and be prepared to intervene. Should you encounter any trees that look like people, Ms. Leeds has also cited the unfortunate need to burn the unsettling foliage in order to release the spirit of the victim so that they can regenerate as usual.

As always, the sharing of information and community vigilance are imperative in warding off this new threat. Please share any information you have on the message boards at town hall or with your neighbors, and consider reaching out to Ms. Leeds or any other respected community figure if you find yourself in a bind. Keep your lanterns lit, Pumpkin Hollow. We’re in for quite the summer.

CUCUMBER FESTIVAL CANCELED DUE TO UNFORTUNATE TURNIP HEX; REPLACED WITH POTLUCK

By Yorick Aberdeen

My Image

They haunt my dinner plate and my dreams.

DOWNTOWN (Temple of Sacred Roots) - In lighter news, a solution has been found to the much-loathed Turnip Hex debacle.

As most residents of Pumpkin Hollow are aware, earlier in spring a crop hex was placed on the island by an unidentified witch that turned all ground crops sown at the time into turnips. While this is not as bad as it could be, it has resulted in mounds upon mounds of turnips and a complete lack of other crops until later harvests. The witch who cast this hex is still at large.

An unfortunate side effect of the hex has been that the beloved and highly anticipated Cucumber Festival, which normally takes place in early June, had to be canceled due to a lack of cucumbers. This has earned the ire of a great many residents who have cited the festival as “their last source of a modicum of joy on this goddess-forsaken island”, among other more colorful statements.

Reverend Degas Clayton of the Temple of Sacred Roots of our Four Earthly Mothers has proposed an alternative to the festival. While not nearly as exciting, Clayton, 57, believes that a turnip potluck is still a great community-building exercise and excuse for a social gathering. He encourages attendees to find the most inventive ways they can think of to cook up excess turnips and present their dishes on the temple lawn during the party. “The sooner we eat the blasted things, the sooner we’ll no longer have to look at them anymore,” said Mayor Poe in her endorsement of the event. It would appear she plans to be in attendance.

To participate, please bring an appropriate dish to the Temple of Sacred Roots on Friday at noon. The party will run until sundown and wine will be provided, which may improve the taste of the turnips. New residents are encouraged to attend even if they are not able to provide a dish so that they can meet their local community and learn more about the church.

The man offers the barest hint of a smile, more around his eyes than mouth. It's not without its warmth, but he does tend to be a bit reserved. "Just Degas will suffice, I assure you. I'm not one for titles, seeing as how I only took over duties of sermon and fellowship with the untimely departure of the previous preacher."

Which is putting it mildly, but no reason to frighten the newcomer right off the bat.

"It is, yes. Near the center of town, in fact. You won't miss it. It's adorned with many panes of multi-colored glass all created right here by our fellow villagers. We come together on Sunday mornings and Wednesdays in the early evening, but I'm usually about on other days as well."

Mo'rtajha nods along, resting her chin upon her arms. Her ears flick up and a warm smile tugs at her lips. "You flatter me, Ahri. I've found you rather easy to talk to, if it's any comfort to you."

Then an idea springs to mind and she practically leaps from her seat, tail flicking with all that energy. "Besides! All the better to partner up then! I could get the conversations started while you draw out all their secrets!"

"As you should!" Mo'rtajha practically tut-tuts at Andy, although she tosses a wink in the woman's direction, ears flicking atop her head. "He had quite a knack for finding trouble, as I well imagine you do."

She considers outstretched hand for but a moment before vigorously giving it a shake. Perhaps a touch too much, but she does let go! "Andy! Yes, a fine name indeed. I know mine can be a spot of trouble so, pray, call me Mort if that is easier to recall, yes?"

"My hero~!" She briefly squeezes his arm tighter, ears flicking with happiness as they began to walk out of the forest. Although they were also still on high alert for any strange sounds from those tiny terrors.

"Oh, yes, but of course! I am Mo'rtajha Tykha, but I know some have trouble with tribal names so simply Mort will also suffice, Kurt-kurt." She's clearly misheard the pause but that hardly slows her down. "I do have to ask, however. I hope you don't find me terribly rude, but I've never seen a Roedygn your height before!"
bluemisfit: (chill)

[personal profile] bluemisfit 2023-07-06 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Mo'rtajha Tykha," Kurt repeated it as best he could, though of course he was unfamiliar with the name style so he probably didn't say it exactly right. But he added, almost as if in apology, "It is a pleasure to meet you - even in these circumstances. And, ah- it's just Kurt."

Her comment got a curious look from Kurt. "I'm not sure I know what a.. Roedygn? Did I get that right?.. is. Where I come from, I am what is called a mutant - a person with a different appearance or different abilities from a normal human. Do you have those where you come from?" It was so curious, he thought, that everyone he met here seemed to be from an entirely different world - he wondered what that made this place.

"Thank you. I will be sure to visit there," Kurt replied with a nod and a glance in the direction of the temple. "I.. certainly have enough to think about, and maybe it will help to be in a place like that. It has been a long time for me." He couldn't remember the last time he'd been to a church, even before he and the others on his team had been flung into more alternate Earths than he could count.

Finally, he told the preacher, "Thank you again for your time. I will see you at the temple. For now.. I think I should see myself to my room. I'm sure you can understand this is a lot to take in."

Logan shrugs the shoulder closest to her lazily as leans his elbow on the bar. "Fresh off the boat, sweetheart. Don't know what you're condoling me for - all I've got to do is the impossible and I'm homebound." He turns more fully to look at his neighbor, with a smirk that could easily be at either of their expenses.

He gives no sign of surprise at her ears, but gives her a once over as she perches on her seat. "You come through the biddy with white hair too?" It's an idle question, perhaps meant to distract from the earlier question. "Don't suppose you ran into any sleazoids beforehand." The latter isn't a question, but it becomes clear as the smirk becomes a grin that he's the only one he's mocking.

"Ah. Now I see." A brute with a brain and no empathy for monsters by the looks of it. Not a comforting mixture when you are one of the monsters.

That thought does momentarily make him reluctant to take the other's hand. He's sure to notice the difference of temperature. But, Erik is always advocating for his kind being just as civil as any other, so he relents and grips Cameron's hand gently but firmly.

"Lord Erik Osborne, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. What is it you do, Mr. Abraham?"

Andy chuckles. "Guilty as charged."

"Thank you, Mort! Well, I'd better get going," she says, remembering the newspaper in her hand and holding it up with a smile. "Thanks for saving me from talking to the paper."

"Hmm, anything a newbie ought to know." Neil hummed, bringing a hand to his chin in thought. "Don't go out at night if you can help it, but if you do, carry a lit lantern and keep to the center of roads rather than the edges. Don't stare into the trees or the sea for too long, lest they start staring back. Don't take anything you see or hear for granted. Question the church. And do not, under any circumstances, trust Dahlia Leeds with anything."

After a pause, he looked back to Lucas and smiled. "That's all I can think of for now."

"Ah, artifacts and tools are very useful to have. I do like working with them whenever I can," Nieve smiled even though she was feeling a tiny bit frustrated still over the fact that she didn't have access to her usual tools. But then she paused, intrigued still. "Yes, I would. Very much!"

"Maybe?" Nieve tilted her head as though she were searching for some far-reaching memory that might confirm to her whether she had been to Kansas or not. But nothing was jumping out to her. "Maybe by accident? There was a time I found myself in a field when I got a little confused on where to place one of my doors."

Then she blinked. "Where you're...from? You're not sure where that is or you don't want to talk about it?"

"That's a good idea!" She snapped her fingers as she turned to look around, glancing at the abundance of doors before picking one across the way and two down. Maybe she just liked the look of it. Either way, she stopped in front of it, mumbling something under her breath before she reached to push the door open. There had been a glimmer of hope but it fell away as she stared at the room that looked like her own but flipped. "Hmm, that doesn't seem like it worked."

"I am, yes," Nieve nodded with a small smile. "At least, I'm fairly sure that I am since I have no memory of being here before. Plus the woman I saw earlier told me as much."

"You're originally from here though?"

Ahri's laugh is a delicate little thing, more of a breath than a noise. He makes doing the impossible sound so easy.

"Sleazoids?" Ahri raises an eyebrow. "No. I was attacked my invading soldiers in my home, and when I woke up, I was on a couch. I spoke to the white-haired woman, like you. And then I came here by boat. From what I can gather, everyone arriving here has had a different experience in their home, but their arrival here is very similar."

She takes a sip of wine, contemplative. It's a mystery that she's yet to solve, and she's fairly certain it's going to take a while, frustratingly.

"You seem perfectly comfortable, though," she notes, halfway between amused and curious. Despite the linen clothing he was provided looking a little out of place among the locals, he seems at home in the bar. Her smile takes on a playful slant. "Comes to places like this often?"
raisedbyfoxes: (004)

Ahri makes an amused little noise. "I suppose I have a talent at getting to people's secrets," she hums, playing coy. She doesn't get to them by way of talking. "I'd be happy to partner up with you to discover the answers to this place's mysteries."

And she's telling the wholehearted truth, too. Mo'rtajha seems like the exact kind of person who would be good at getting people to open up and like her, the ideal sort to play detective.

And then if anybody seems like they may have valuable knowledge, well, Ahri can simply... take a look inside their memories.

"For now, I am being put up in the tavern. How about we meet later, to discuss where to start?"

He knows stuff has happened in Cardiff, the most recent thing is the Rift opening and The Doctor having to seal that; along with Jack and Rose. Torchwood, hasn't happened for him.

She'll play around for another minute or so, a small eternity with your eyes closed. Laughing and vanishing, only to pop up somewhere else close by. But even she knows people have their limits.

Next time Logan gets a poke directly on his left shoulder. Is he all bark or does he have bite?

Degas inclines his head in a nod. "Of course. Good day to you, Mister Wagner, and keep your lantern lit."

He'll give a small bow, before taking his leave. It seems the newcomers come in all shapes and sizes. Something he needs to consider for future encounters.

"Same here!" Dahlia replied brightly. "Oh, a doctor! We've been needing one of those. The only doctor we have on the island right now is that useless lout in the woods doing his preposterous dream therapy." She rolled her eyes. "As for who's in charge--- it depends what capacity! You're probably looking for Mayor Poe, though any member of town council can help you as well, myself included."
