FIRST NEW ARRIVALS IN HALF-DECADE: MORE TO FOLLOW?

By Yorick Aberdeen

TAWNY BEACH - Big news at Jack’s Marina--- for the first time in roughly five years, the Marrow Isle Port Authority has reported a new arrival by ferry. And it’s not just one person.

Since the advent of the Barrier that has plagued our fair island for the past 5 years, no transport vessels have been logged for departure or arrival by the Port Authority. And for good reason! Any boat that attempted to make the journey beyond the blackened waters surrounding the island has met with a terrible fate ranging from property destruction to untimely demise. While said casualties don’t quite carry the sting they used to, the situation has obviously proven less than ideal for those looking to leave and ultimately halted the mass exodus from Pumpkin Hollow indefinitely.

Today, for the first time since the formation of the Barrier, we are seeing brand new faces arrive at the docks. All of them have been somewhat disoriented and some have claimed to be from locations that do not exist in our world. We approached one of these new arrivals, Milo Fields, for comment on his experience.

“A lady in an office told me I was dead and then I woke up on a boat,” Fields, 26, was quoted as stating on the matter. Succinct and fascinating, indeed! It would seem that for once, our island’s propensity for supernatural oddities has brought us something that we can be hopeful about. More on this as it develops.

‘CREEPY LITTLE TREES’ SEEN IN TOWN

By Yorick Aberdeen

My Image

Artist rendition of a "Brutok".

NORTHWEST HOLLOW (Prague Mills) - This morning Town Hall received a report from the road by the lumber mill, which leads out to Crane’s Ridge, that there have been more sightings of the “tiny tree people” that have been appearing around Lockwood Forest. Over the past few weeks there have been multiple sightings of short-statured creatures with gnarled limbs, bark complexions, and leaf-shaped masks moving about among the trees. There have also been several reports claiming that they have been in town. These reports are particularly prominent in areas toward the outskirts of the forest such as the aforementioned Prague Mills.

However, movement is not the only activity people claim to have seen. Many of these sightings detail more insidious behaviors such as mean-spirited practical jokes, theft, and attempted kidnapping.

The Pumpkin Hollow Gazette reached out to local historian and town council member Dahlia Leeds for any insight on these creatures from her research.

“These creatures appear to be Brutoks,” Leeds, 23, concluded in her interview with us on Tuesday evening. “They’re angry woodland spirits known to appear in cursed forests, much like our own.”

Ms. Leeds went on to issue a number of safety warnings for residents. According to her research, these Brutoks often move in groups and will lock on to woodland travelers who make eye contact with them. Their eyes are not visible so this can be done by accident quite easily if one spends too much time staring into trees. If Brutoks attach themselves to you, they will follow you home, proceeding to destroy your property, hide your personal items, attempt to cause you bodily harm, tear up your garden, and eventually spirit you away to the woods. Victims of these kidnappings will be “planted” in the woods by the Brutoks and spend the next several hours enduring the deeply unpleasant process of being turned into a tree, ultimately killing the individual. A gruesome affair.

There are several ways to dispel a Brutok invasion before it escalates to kidnapping. Ms. Leeds recommends observing their behavior for clues and keeping an eye out for puzzles set by the creatures while outside, though there may be other solutions. If you are unable to dispel them, it is possible to fight them off with brute force. Those walking in or near the woods are advised to keep their eyes on the trail but listen carefully for sounds of distress and be prepared to intervene. Should you encounter any trees that look like people, Ms. Leeds has also cited the unfortunate need to burn the unsettling foliage in order to release the spirit of the victim so that they can regenerate as usual.

As always, the sharing of information and community vigilance are imperative in warding off this new threat. Please share any information you have on the message boards at town hall or with your neighbors, and consider reaching out to Ms. Leeds or any other respected community figure if you find yourself in a bind. Keep your lanterns lit, Pumpkin Hollow. We’re in for quite the summer.

CUCUMBER FESTIVAL CANCELED DUE TO UNFORTUNATE TURNIP HEX; REPLACED WITH POTLUCK

By Yorick Aberdeen

My Image

They haunt my dinner plate and my dreams.

DOWNTOWN (Temple of Sacred Roots) - In lighter news, a solution has been found to the much-loathed Turnip Hex debacle.

As most residents of Pumpkin Hollow are aware, earlier in spring a crop hex was placed on the island by an unidentified witch that turned all ground crops sown at the time into turnips. While this is not as bad as it could be, it has resulted in mounds upon mounds of turnips and a complete lack of other crops until later harvests. The witch who cast this hex is still at large.

An unfortunate side effect of the hex has been that the beloved and highly anticipated Cucumber Festival, which normally takes place in early June, had to be canceled due to a lack of cucumbers. This has earned the ire of a great many residents who have cited the festival as “their last source of a modicum of joy on this goddess-forsaken island”, among other more colorful statements.

Reverend Degas Clayton of the Temple of Sacred Roots of our Four Earthly Mothers has proposed an alternative to the festival. While not nearly as exciting, Clayton, 57, believes that a turnip potluck is still a great community-building exercise and excuse for a social gathering. He encourages attendees to find the most inventive ways they can think of to cook up excess turnips and present their dishes on the temple lawn during the party. “The sooner we eat the blasted things, the sooner we’ll no longer have to look at them anymore,” said Mayor Poe in her endorsement of the event. It would appear she plans to be in attendance.

To participate, please bring an appropriate dish to the Temple of Sacred Roots on Friday at noon. The party will run until sundown and wine will be provided, which may improve the taste of the turnips. New residents are encouraged to attend even if they are not able to provide a dish so that they can meet their local community and learn more about the church.

"Whenever you can then," Degas says, in lieu of agreeing outright. he does raise his eyebrows, just a touch.

"Fishing can be rather dangerous in the best of times, although I'm sure you already know this." He gives Zelda a fatherly look. "Have you already settled on a boat and crew? Otherwise I can make a few arrangements."

He keeps nodding as he follows along, "Right, right, okay, I'll do that first thing. Oh, they do? That's very helpful!"

He's never lived by himself before. He's...never lived anywhere before, unless one can count a spare charger in a quiet corner of a lab "home". This should be interesting, to say the least. Maybe a little lonely, too. He'll have to wait and see what he thinks about that after he's been there for a few weeks. As an android designed to be around humans a lot, integrating and blending into their society, he could potentially look at being by himself as an experiment?

"I will be sure to be here tomorrow, Dahlia." Her enthusiasm is infectious, and his own smile reflects that. "I hope we can all turn this place around, then."

He doesn't mind; it's nice to be immediately accepted amongst humans. Given the situation back in Detroit, it's downright welcome. The sound of being a member of a real community, with no one giving him dirty or even second looks, with people who are happy he's there?

"It's more than I could have ever hoped for."

Something about Degas' subtle optimism feels comforting to Andy. Even while the world outside moves on--in some shape or form, presumably--the people of this quiet town still find motivation, pleasure, and companionship. Despite her fears, Andy finds herself drawn to it.

"Thanks, Degas." Andy smiles, her plate now full of various turnip dishes. "I really needed to hear that."

Like flipping a switch Mo'rtajha latches onto Zelda, hugging her arm. She's practically nuzzling into the other woman with excitement!

"Oh! I'm in the tavern still, yes! I'm quite well versed with serving food and drink and so have begun to help out in the tavern. But there is a lack of, ah, entertainment here, yes?" Mort chirps happily. "How about you? No doubt you've already some noble profession and place to live?"

[personal profile] prise_de_fer 2023-06-21 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It IS scary! Mo'rtajha will totally say so, as many times as she needs to. The fact that Zelda was so chill with the situation made it even stranger to the miqo'te, but maybe princesses are used to danger.

"Oh, quite yes. Zelda is a very strong woman, I think she could have faced one of the little fiends face to face, if it...ah, were a bit taller." She trails off, rambling slightly. The burtoks are so small, but so very scary!

"Regardless, you should heed the warnings. As a fellow newcomer I would hate to find out that you've come to any sort of trouble after we part!"

"Ahri," Mo'rtajha purrs the name, rolling it over on her tongue. A striking name for a striking woman. Something in the way Ahri carries herself belies strength and a touch of regal air.

She does wonder, too, are there others like her in Ionia? What is that world like? Hopefully not like the one they're currently stuck in...

"Oh yes, there are many miqo'te in Eorzea! Most live in different tribes, some in the cities. Even two of the greatest heroes of our realm is one of my people," She puffs up a little with pride. not that she could lay claim to either but that's besides the point. "Myself, I'm from a small tribe, but we're as clever as we are nimble~! I have to wonder...is it the same for you? Your people?"

There, see? We'll have company either way. "Jon and Zelda. I don't think I recognize those names. Do you know where I might find them so I can say hi?"

SO MUCH PAPERWORK! We better get a treat after this!

There there, Jo. We'll be done soon enough, probably, I think.

"I'll be good, I promise," Sasha says, smiling slightly. "Something productive, hm... any suggestions?

"And, this is very important: will any of them involve delicious pie?"

Beatrix groans slightly. "Don't mind Jonas. He can be very childish when he feels like it, but I assure you he's as much an adult as I am."

After having completed the dreaded paperwork, as well as getting everything else sorted out, Beatrix is finally actually attending the job she signed up for.

"Jon and Zelda, she said" she mutters. "We didn't manage to find either of them before. I wonder if we'll run into them now that we're actually on the boat?"

Unbeknownst to Beatrix, she's passing by Zelda right about now!

"Hah, you got me! I like to ask a lot of questions, that's for sure." But that's often the only way to get answers, so why not? Lucas is just glad that Neil doesn't send him packing.

"Huh, so things were already happening then..." Lucas repeats in a murmur, mulling over everything Neil laid out. "So, what do you mean by six siblings left? That sounds like a big family...Huh." He pauses a moment. "Clayton is...the preacher, right?"

"Are you interested in historical studies at all?"

"Wow," Andy nods. The name Zelda was new to her, so she was sure she hadn't met them yet. Based on the emphasis on vigilance that everyone seemed to have regarding these Brutok, Andy was sure Zelda must be every bit as capable as her companion asserts. "Zelda--is she a newcomer, too?"

"Thanks for the heads up. I can use all the help I can get around here, it seems!"

"In my world, we are known as Vastaya. I've encountered many different kinds in my long years; avian, simian, piscine, feline, lupine. Even some that are goat-like, or chameleon-like. Most tend to stick to their own kind, in tribes or family groups. Some are far more like animals than humans, some more closely resemble humans with some small animal features, and most of us are capable of shapeshifting to various degrees."

It's strange to be explaining Vastaya; she's never had to before, because everybody in Runeterra knew what they were. What she has had to explain is her own nature: nobody that she's ever met has seen a vulpine Vastaya, not before meeting her.

"Do you think you're going to miss your tribe?" she asks Mo'rtajha, a faint note of wistfulness in her voice. "This place is very different to your Ala Mhigo in the desert."

And now Ahri has to face the question of whether or not she's going to make herself useful. She's been made aware that the town will provide the means for a basic living if she chooses not to work, but if she's going to try to find a way back home, participating in this society seems prudent.

"I... am not sure what I will do," she finally admits, gaze downcast, staring down at her tea. "I have never worked. I have always foraged for my food and lived under the stars, and on the rare occasion that I absolutely needed money, I just took on odd jobs."

She hates being so truthful about something so vulnerable, but Milo has been friendly and kind so far, perhaps he might have a useful idea about her future that Ahri hasn't considered.

"Of course." His eyes crinkle a bit, hint of a smile mostly hidden by his beard. "I dare say that bartender and preacher have much in common. We're not often aware of how much of an impact we might have on others. But I'll spare you a sermon for now."

He briefly waves a hand, as if waving himself off from the topic before he really gets going. "However, you're most welcome to stop by the temple on Sunday morning or Wednesday evening for fellowship. Scripture aside, it's become a sort of...hmm, defacto community meeting as well. There is also our esteemed historical society as well, if that should interest you. Ms. Leeds is in charge there and I think you two would get along just fine."

Degas rubs at his temple, sure he's heard at least two other shifts and possibly a third. And they have names? He feels a headache brewing.

"I would suggest looking into our historical society. It's run by Ms. Leeds and I'm certain she would appreciate an..a set of inquisitive minds." This is too confusing for him but he's trying.

"As for pie, well. The tavern may have some sweets. They tend to be rare events these days, but with your arrival, and the others, perhaps that can be turned around."

Andy grins. "Truer words have never been spoken."

"Thanks for the invite." She shifts her weight from one foot to the other as she glances toward the temple. "I can't say I've ever been a church-goer, but there's certainly no temples like this in my hometown. Perhaps I will make an appearance."

So preoccupied with listening to Zelda's tales of puzzles, Ahri doesn't notice the movement in the trees either. Later, she'll scold herself for being so careless. She's just not used to being around people this much; she's tired, she's hungry, she's off her game.

And before she knows it, Zelda's getting dragged away by dozens of the little beasts.

Ahri leaps to Zelda's side in a blur, ephemeral blue fire tangled between her fingers. She grabs one Brutok, who makes a noise like peeling bark as it's wreathed in flame and tossed aside. Her claws rake into a second one, shoving it back, and as they turn to look at the thing attacking them with their hollow eyes, Ahri hisses back at them with bared fangs and eyes shining in the darkness, all nine of her tails unfurling and spreading in a threatening display.

Still, they're determined, swarming over Zelda like a colony of ants. Strength in numbers. But Ahri doesn't falter, picking them off one by one and setting them ablaze -- the number of them rolling on the forest floor in desperate effort to put the spirit flames out is growing slowly, slowly freeing Zelda up. "Grab onto something, if you can," Ahri says urgently, "dig your hands into the ground if you must. Do not let them drag you away."

"Man, that shit was fucked up." His expression turned more dour at that question. "They called it 'void touch,' the people who were helping me. My arm got caught in this--- black hole looking thing... sorta. It's not really fun to talk about." Milo paused. "But hey, I got better!"

"Hmm." Milo furrowed his brow. "Yeah, I feel you. Going from living freely like that to a full-time grind is a big change. I picked farming because it was something I already kinda do, so maybe start there. What kinds of odd jobs did you pick up? Maybe there's something similar on offer."

"At the docks! Where you arrived on the ferry, Jack's Marina? Next boarding is the day after tomorrow, so you'll probably meet them on the boat if you don't run into them on your way there," Dahlia replied. "Anything else you need for the moment?"

"Oh, yes, a very big family," Neil agreed, nodding. "Japhet and Jane Leeds founded the town as young, wealthy entrepreneurial sorts, and they had a veritable dynasty. In addition to their siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews living around the island, Leeds Estate up on the hill overlooking town once housed their thirteen children. All of them have since died, save for Dahlia, the youngest. She was conveniently spared by the curse of deathlessness. As for Clayton, yes, Degas is the reverend at the temple. Melly was his late wife. Their children thankfully skipped town rather than dying. Small blessings." He flashed a tight smile.
