Hearing her in his head—feeling and perceiving every word—for a second, John can’t breathe. For a second, he wishes…
His breath catches hard on the lump in his throat as he lifts his hands and bows his head to press his lips to Co’s fluffy little body. He’s come to find comfort there, trying to lose himself in the warm, soft fragility of her tiny being. She lets him sort of cuddle her that way, and like she does now, turns to peck at his face just enough to feel it without leaving a mark. It keeps him in the moment—reminds him he’s not alone.
That’s not always a good thing—right now, it is.
Several moments pass before he can lift his head, and still his eyes are too bright when he does—remembering the chopper leaving him behind, remembering the pain, remembering his relief when Co started shooting…remembering her voice as she died.
“Not long ago, an idiot made a wish to be saved that was granted.” He replies hoarsely. “A girl saved him, and now is dead. She will always be dead. And the idiot lives…I won’t claim to know how you feel, my idiocy has limits. But, selfishly…know that I wish you were alive. Both of you.”
