"I'm lucky," Bart insists quietly, rubbing a hand across one of the discolored patches. "I watched so many animals dying of it, I watched father and Marguerit panic and fall apart over it. That I made it to the other side of any of it is a miracle. Even if it's just because something out there decided that I was still necessary."
He's very still, keeping his arm out for First Aid to take his blood pressure and find the appropriate vein. "Taking deep breaths is a struggle, the same way that it would be if you just woke up and had been breathing fairly shallowly but suddenly attempted to take a long, deep breath. I can't say for certain, but there may be a buildup of tissue that's made the inner lining of my lungs less elastic."
