slaps this man's bald head to the beat of blue monday

Ten days. Would Innocent do the same?

Would he have waited even that long?

His ministry had been in slums and warzones, two wars in the Congo, in Baghdad, in Kabul. And now that Aldo had stopped taking everything so damn personally, he could see that their new Holy Father was a good man, who looked out for the marginalized.

(Another reason that he himself really shouldn't have been elected Pope, he thinks. Thomas had been right in pointing out his lack of courage. Would he have dawdled on something such as this, or worse, condemned it, even while taking his own what-some-would-call-unfitness to his grave? Something to search his soul about later.)

Different Pope in a different world in different circumstances speaking ex cathedra or not, he had to admire it. And whether or not he'd personally have had the courage to declare it from the Throne of St. Peter, there's a beautiful simplicity to it, a clarity of thought and spirit.

"That's a bold move," he says, and there's approval in his voice. "And - while I don't know all of the circumstances involved - one I happen to agree with. We are what we are, as God made us. That can't be a sin."

He is what he is. And he's come to terms with that.
